The University of Mainz is named after the most famous son of Mainz, Johannes Gutenberg, who invented the first mechanical printing press about 1439. The University is medium-sized by German standards, with more than 30,000 students. Additionally, it is one of the only universities in all of Germany with a true campus, as nearly all departments and institutes are to be found on a closed area west of the city centre.
The University of Mainz offers a broad spectrum of studies, encompassing the humanities, natural and social sciences, business administration and economics, medicine, art, music and sport. Only technical studies and engineering sciences are not available.
